Professional Development
Merle Braithwaite facilitates professional development workshops on various aspects of language and learning, particularly:
- Language skills required for higher order thinking
- Language acquisition for new learners of English
- The development of phonemic awareness to facilitate literacy
School professional development options include school support service courses, in- school staff and syndicate meetings and teacher only days. As well as the courses listed below, customised courses will be developed on request.

Full-day course for teachers in core curriculum areas (Y7 – Y12) - Making sense of the grapheme-phoneme relationship
Full-day workshop for teachers of literacy (All levels) - Developing the literacy skills of English Language Learners
Full-day workshop for classroom teachers (All levels) - Supporting the ESOL Learner
Full-day, general course for teacher-aides, supporting ESOL students in classes and in small groups (all levels) - Using vocabulary strategies with English Language Learners
Full-day course for teacher-aides, supporting ESOL students (Y5 – Y11). This course is ideal for teacher-aides who have previously attended the general course. - In-school courses related to aspects of language, literacy and learning. Courses are developed on request, to meet specific requirements for in-school professional development programmes, such as staff and syndicate meetings and teacher- only days.
- Workplace courses developed to meet the needs of staff and management.
