The Noun Phrase Game
This game is useful to reinforce the structure and use of noun phrases.
You will need:
- A printed copy of the game
- Dice and counters
Instructions:
- Play as for snakes and ladders
- Players take turns to roll the die, and move their counter the required number of spaces.
- The player makes a noun phrase using the adjective in the square on which he/she lands e.g. a cold ice-cream (extension: make a sentence containing that noun phrase)
- If a player lands on a square with an arrow, two phrases should be made. The adjectives in these squares are antonyms.
- The winner is the first player to cross the finishing line – get off the board.

Question cards
During the formulaic stage of language acquisition, learners use learned phrases (Formulaic chunks) based on simple sentence patterns e.g. My name is...; I like to eat...; My telephone number is...
Question cards form the basis of a useful activity with learners at this stage.
Suggested activity:
- Cut out the question cards, and place face down on the table, or place in a container.
- Learners take turns to pick up a question, and read it aloud – asking another learner the question, as stated on the card.
- The other learner answers the question.
